HDMI and PS2 titles on PS3

Just got my PS3 this morning and I'm already contemplating getting
an LCD TV. If I get one with HDMI input on it, the manual states
that it supports 1080p, 1080i, 768p and 576p. Does this mean that
any ps2 titles running in 576i (standard pal) won't run on a TV
connected via HDMI unless the game supports progressive scan?
Is HDMI of any practical quality difference to component, as
component seems to be able to support all of the combinations of
resolutions and interlace.
It's all so confusing to choose a set to buy - as I want to keep my
ps2 so that I can run incompatible titles, whilst also using my DVD
player that can play divx/xvid, whilst the ps3 can't, and therefore
having more inputs such as 2x scart is useful.
