It shows up as any external device like a HDD or flash drive would. You can transfer data to it that way, but you'll need a third party tool to convert videos, like ffmpegx.
However, I can strongly recommend iPSP (http://ipsp.kaisakura.com/), it costs $19.95, but it will automatically back up your saves, has a great video encoder and will allow you to sync playlists and albums from iTunes and iPhoto to it, and will manage all your folders, a great all-in-one app.
Bought the PSP yesterday (Value pack from woolies with two free games). Luckily the F1 game wasn't in stock and they were going on about ordering it in for me. 'Noo!' I thought - I can't stand driving games!
Anyway, they opted to let me have another £34.99 game instead, so I've now got Lemmings and Locoroco, both great fun.
I've looked briefly at iPSP, but will have to fiddle with it a bit more as I couldn't get the video encoder to work properly - not sure if that's just because it's a feature limited demo version or not.
IIRC (could be wrong, I haven't had a PSP in about a year and the new version is substantially changed) it encodes the first 10mb or something without a license.
