It has more spoken word, cutscene animations and narrative than any other
game I have ever played. It is quite possible that this would annoy the
tits off some people, because it seems so be quite linear in storyline,
with 15 minute cutscenes between every 15 minutes of gameplay (a slight
exaggeration, but it feels like that).
What is the point in a game being like this? If it requires that much of
your time to be taken up with cut scenes to explain the story, then quite
frankly it has 'failed' as a game.
I can certainly see your point, but you are essentially getting hours and hours worth of a big anime sci-fi story, with some gaming thrown in too. Possibly.
I don't as yet have a clear view of whether it succeeds or fails as a game, because I have simply never played anything quite like it. I shall continue and let you know however.
I like a story in an RPG as much as the next person but the likes of Baldurs
Gate II, Deus Ex, KoToR, NWN, etc. manage it fine without making 50% of the
gameplay pointless. If it takes that much time to explain what is going on,
then how is it a game?
It's got a really huge story and then umpteen sub-plots. I think they've tried to take the view that this might be the first in the series that a person has picked up and so have then decided that you need to know everything about everything. Possibly a flawed approach, but we shall see.
The epicness (if you'll pardon the word) of it is staggering. A *lot *of people have spent a *great* deal of time, putting all this together.
A valid question.
When does a DVD film with multiple endings included stop being a film and
become a game?
