I made the silly mistake of miscalculating a currency conversion and was charged the best part of £10 by the Royal Mail as their collection fee for a smaller amount of duty - I was only 80 pence or so over the allowed duty free limit.
You were lucky. I was at the Royal Mail depot near here the other day paying a £7.60 fee on a £28 purchase, and the woman behind the counter said "those fees are awful, aren't they? You know, I bought my son a game from eBay from someone in America. $2 it cost me, and when it arrived, they'd slapped a £47 fee on it".
£47!?!?! .
