in that the PS3 had the aim and fire on L2 & R2. I don't know why developers insist on using these buttons as aim and fire. It feels so unnatural and they should be on L1 & R1 like they used to be on the PS2
Seconded.

I now consider L1 and R1 to be an informal standard of aim and fire, Call of Duty 4/5 use them and so did I think Far Cry 2 (and most others I assume).
L2 and R2 have too much 'travel' so it slows down the shot just a little, making the result less responsive - horrible buttons. This needs to be configurable otherwise there are plenty of other great shooters to play.
And throwing grenades is stupidly cumbersome from my 10 mins play also.

Yes exactly, they just don't work well.
The problem I have, maybe it is my small hands, is that if I use L1+R1 my index fingers are nicely placed in a natural position. But if I have to use L2+R2 my index fingers have to bend down towards the buttons and it is not comfortable. I could use the second fingers but that does not feel normal either.

It would be much better to have aim and fire on L1+R1 and use the less used controls like throwing a grenade or weapon selection for L2+R2.

It seems like they are trying to copy the Xbox 360 controller layout but that will never work because of the different design. The left and right bumpers are suitable for grenade and weapon selection because they are higher than the triggers and not suitable for aim and fire.
