Re: Back-To-Work Play Want Bin (PWB 05/01/09)

Those rules are made up for people who passively watch films, but I'll be
using
it for games and consequently they don't apply to me:
I'll be about 8" away when sitting back, but during boss battles I
will sit forward and be around 6-7" away, unless it's a Wii game, in
which case my location will vary from between 8" and 3" at a frequency
of around 3Hz!

8 inches? You've got your " and ' confused (or I have). Anyway, from 8
feet away I'd say a 42 inch screen is about right. FYI, the rules are all
about whether you can make out the resolution of the picture. Nothing to do
with movies or games.

I also have a PZ80 and one of my criteria for my new tele was SD
performance. Nothing I saw or have seen since comes close to the PZ80 for
SD material. All LCDs show up artifacts whereas my plasma shows the most
CRT like picture I've ever seen. It's such a natural picture to watch.

The latest LCD sets can pretty much match Plasma in Full HD at 40-42"
size
these days, but any bigger than that Plasma is still king. and for SD
material
at any size Plasma is also still king (unless you fancy going down to 36"
and
buying an old CRT ;))

I'd disagree unless you're looking at Panasonic LCDs. Panny are head and
shoulders above everything IMO. I'm ignoring Pioneer as they are in a
different price league. Currys had a Panny 32 inch LCD (the one with
freesat) in between an LG and a Samsung at the weekend. The Panny was the
only one with a decent black level.

This reinforces my decision to go for this Toshiba LCD. It's brand new
(released December) and is 42", and has an in-built upscaler for SD.

Every HD tele has a built in upscaler. You need to go and see the tele
you're interested in showing a freeview picture. EmpireDirect (if you have
one) normally have freeview on all of the teles on display. Personally, I
wouldn't touch Toshiba after looking at them a few months back.

Have a look at www.avforums.com. There is bound to be some useful info on
there.

I already have a big old CRT which I love. I'm currently going through
a domestic battle to keep it. It's truly huge but it does a gorgeous
job of SD signals. My perfect TV would be one of those HD CRTs but
they're no longer available sadly.

And put up with the awful geometry they had?

My recommendation to you for your screen size and if SD is a factor, is
to go
for the Panasonic PX80.

I ruled this one out because of the lack of 1080p.

Fan wise on the PZ80, I can't hear mine now, but obviously I have no idea
what
will happen in the future.

In my experience, fans fail.

The speed they run at I doubt they will fail. 3 fans all at the top blowing
out of the set so they don't suck in dust or anything else into the tele.
Even if they do fail it'll hardly be rocket science to replace them.

In a silent room I can just about make out the fans. With the sound turned
up I can't hear them at all and I was very concerned about the potential
noise. I'd taken it out of the box, switched it on, tuned it in and was
watching the screen for about half an hour before I realised I couldn't hear
the fans.

Thanks for your input btw... it's really helpful to bounce this around
with other people!

Seriously look at the Panny plasmas again. You won't find a better picture
for the money.
