For Christmas?

Due to various circumstances our family didn't buy each other anything this year for the first time ever.

So I bought myself a DS lite (red) with Professor Layton then out here on holiday looking through the fake Game store I spotted Zelda Phantom Hourglass so I got that aswell.

What did you all get for crimbo? (for those that celebrate it)

I didn't really get any as such. I ordered Tomb Raider Underworld in the BA just before Chrimbo for myself and it arrived yesterday. Having had a go at it this morning it's Tomb Raider all right, but with beautiful graphics, nicely animated Lara, better hint systems and just everything turned up a few degrees. I've done the opening level which was nicely gripping. If you've liked her adventures previously I heartily recommend this - I've only pushed one block so far and there seems to be multiple ways to get to the solution of the "big puzzle rooms" TR does so much of. So, an evolution that shows some thought has been put into things but it still requires patience as if you charge at things you can miss jumps and the camera can still be a bit flakey, but as I said I think this isn't and never has been a game that lends itself to trying to play fast. It also feels like they've cribbed some ideas from Uncharted as well, as the combat is much better and the level designs are, from what I've seen, far more varied.

Tomb Raider (360)
I agree with most of that, except the graphics aren't _that_ much of an advance on what went before. And settings aren't very varied so far (I reckon I'm around half way through). It's jungles and "underground areas". I'm trying to think of other settings in previous games, but I suppose that probably sums those up too. /Haven't come across any Egytian-type sandy areas yet.
Graphics are pretty ropey for current 360/PS3 games in fact. Camera angles are the biggest let-down in the game. Frequently I find myself hanging onto a ledge, wondering which way to jump, unable to spot any obvious points to aim for and unable to swing the camera every which way I might like, which leads to leaps of faith, which are usually fateful.

I'm too annoyed at myself to let this pass... should be FATAL of course. Dunno how that mistake was even possible to make, but there you go. Now I've made it worse by pointing it out I know, but I hads ta do it!!

But I do enjoy spending time thinking about what to do next rather than whizzing around, leaping from wall to pole, etc., hoping for the best, not much caring either way -as in...

Prince of Persia.
I played it once so far. Cleared one or two 'points on the map'. Got bored. I probably haven't played it enough yet, but it doesn't look so great to me. I don't understand the oohing and aahing at the graphics. It's not like any of those jpeg backdrops are 'interactiveable'. Probably the best is yet to come, I imagine. I hope. Gameplaywise... it's running, jumping, falling, being-saved, running, jumping, fighting bosses... I'll give it more time after I finish Tomb Raider. I find it too confusing switching between the two otherwise as there are different tactics and control methods even though there are many superficial similarities.

Pure
Again, I only played it once. I'll get to it in more detail eventually. I hadn't realised the quads are so modifiable -and _need_ to be modified even. More or less.
I'm not sure I like that part of it, but I'll reserve judgement for a later date.

Mirror's Edge hasnt' arrived yet. Thankfully.

-Kevin.
