I'm downloading it as I type this. I have a nasty suspicion it'll be
another grinder, but there are some elements that intrigue me like the
server v server PvP which I haven't seen before, and each player getting
their own house which can be used to store and interact with alts (saves
logging in and out to transfer objects and items from one alt to
another). Some games offer houses already but you have to make a lot of
gold to buy them, so to get one from the very start is a plus.
Let us know how you get on - I'm far too busy with Fallout 3 but once
completed I will be back on Guild Wars
GamersHell servers are fast - 20mb/s!), installed it and tried to log in.
That's as far as I got.
My log in works for the website and forum (it's actually a shared log-in
because I play BBO which is run by the same people), but not for the game,
and it seems quite a few people are having the same problem.
I've also read however that access is being rolled out in phases so it
could also be that I'm just in a queue.
Paul.
Well, I finally got in late last night. Not had much time to really play it
but a few thoughts so far (incidentally, I'm on the EN-EU servers but I
doubt the EN-US ones are any different:
- Lots of spelling/grammatical errors. These should've been ironed out in
the closed beta, but there's still time for them to work on it seeing as the
game's still in beta.
- Graphics issues: The graphics themselves are surprisingly good, with just
a few crap lowres textures here and there. Unfortunately whatever graphics
engine they're using is giving my 6800 a hard time. This is the first time
I've played a game where I have had warnings flash up on screen that the GPU
temperature has exceeded 90C. When I checked in Speedfan, it had actually
reached a sizzling 93C, only a degree below cut-off. Reading in the forums
it seems I'm not alone with this issue - even 8800 owners have experienced
this problem, so it's a coding error somewhere that's maxing out the GPU
regardless of in-game settings (even on the lowest settings with everything
turned low, the GPU maxed out at 93C). Sometimes I o/c my card, but the
temperatures have never gone beyond 81C. In this instance, the card was
certainly NOT overclocked.
- Six classes to choose from, but you can switch class at any time. I don't
know if there's a cost involved though as I have only really started out. I
don't know if there's a limit on how many alts you can create.
- Character customisation is better than most, but still lacks the ability
to morph faces. Having said that, each character typically has between 20-25
faces to choose from for both male and female characters, so at least
in-game it's unlikely you'll come across another player who looks identical
to you. You can, however adjust body attributes, make your character tall or
short, big-breasted or small (for female characters), muscular or skinny
etc, so there's a fair deal to play around with.
- Nice music that hasn't got me reaching for the mute option yet. Sound
effects are about average for this kind of game.
- Great community, which is rare for a f2p game these days. Very helpful and
friendly players. However, like a lot of MMOs now, each server has multiple
"channels" and players keep switching between them. I don't know if you can
communicate with other players on your friends list if they are on a
different channel to you.
- Some of the quests I've done so far seem to be your typical 'fetch'-type
scenarios, but these seem to be aimed at introducing you to the controls and
gradually easing you into the game.
- I'm playing a warrior-class character at the moment and the magic/chi
system is unlike anything I've experienced before. Instead of starting out
with maxed chi, you have a 'rage' meter that temporarily fills up as you
fight, allowing you to initiate power moves and combos. It takes a while to
get the hang of it, but it seems to make sense. I'm going to try a new
character tonight from a different class to see if the 'rage' meter's still
there.
- There's a pets system in the game but I haven't tried that out yet.
- All weapons/armour/clothing carry a durability rating which goes down the
more you fight/are attacked necessitating repair from time to time.
- You get your own home. It's actually an instanced room, but you also get a
unique number for it and can set a password if you want to invite other
players to it. You don't get any furniture from the off though - you have to
buy it, but luckily it seems gold isn't that hard to come by.
- The maps are a little small, but this has the advantage of keeping players
close together. This can obviously be a disadvantage too if you're
surrounded by KSers and PKers.
That's it so far!
Paul.
