Since trying out Ubuntu, I always smile when people give "there are so many people willing to help you out on forums" as a reason to try it out. Surely not having the problems you need to search out the answers for in the first place is a better situation? I'm not sure how long I could have gone on checking Google each time just to find out where on my own hard disk an application had (seemingly arbitrarily) installed itself.

I wouldn't call "being unfamiliar with the system" a 'problem'. If that's the case, I'd say that every operating system under the sun has a problem - my mother has no concept of a "Program Files" directory or a "Registry", and I have /no/ idea where to look on a Mac for an installed application.

Switching to a new operating system is a learning experience - no matter /what/ that operating system might be.

Well I did cite familiriaty as a reason for liking one OS over an other. That said, I never had to search a forum to figure out that "program files" was where program files live when the folder was introduced to Windows. OTOH although I've found out where MySQL lives on Ubuntu (since it may be somewhere else on another OS), I've no idea why, or what makes it different from another application that decided to install in .etc or whatever instead.

If you have a link to a guide or something outlining the significance of these locations I'd be interested in reading it.
