There's a rather big problem right there.

The name of the client? Available in the documentation, and also pointed at by the shortcut in my Main Menu - which is the Ubuntu equivalent of the Start Menu.

Points me straight at where the program is installed. I'm not aware of a similar single command on Windows that'll do that.

Well, there's a "find" right in the start menu.

Which has the same problem you highlighted above - it'll only work if you know what you're looking for. Additionally, it takes a while - /and/ it'll bring up anything that contains the text you're searching for. A 'Find' for 'sftp', for example, will bring up a document called 'bensftpdetails.txt'.

Incidentally, Ubuntu also has a graphical search. Since 8.04, it's been called the 'Tracker', is built-in to the top taskbar, and indexes your drive for full-text searching in the same way as Vista's search does.

You can also just hunt
around in the start menu or in the program files folder. Icons and
"friendly" names are a huge help.

Eermmm... I hate to tell you this, but my Ubuntu system has icons and "friendly" names. Just because the command line is the quickest way to do something doesn't mean it's the /only/ way. It also has a 'Start Menu', although it refers to it as the 'Main Menu' and is accessible via an Ubuntu icon in the top-right taskbar.

Sure, but the learning curve is a bit steep, and all attempts at
improving this seem to end up being more crap piled on top of a very
shaky foundation.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Mine differs from yours, but that's OK.
