buying a Drobo box is because you can't afford it, why not try the
cheaper solution first? If you buy a bunch of new drives and FreeNAS
doesn't do what you're after then you've already got the drives to put
into the Drobo box as and when you decide to purchase it.

I've got an old laptop lying around and the vinium configuration
certainly seems to be the sort of thing i'm after.
