Has anyone ever used any of those Hong Kong based eBay sellers to buy (reasonably) expensive electrical goods? The ludicrously high feedback most of them have puts my mind at ease regarding honesty and possible scams, but do they send legit retail units? And what are the odds of big tax bills and if they fail can most be sent to a UK repair place?

I'm looking at this camera: http://tinyurl.com/2lyqxj

Which if I bought over here by the time I've got a SD card and small tripod would be around £350.
no idea as to their reliability, but a quick scan of their feedback
shows they use Fedex as a courier, which would suggest to me you'd get
a hefty VAT bill on top of that BIN and postage, plus whatever Fedex
decide is a ludicrous enough handling fee for themselves, too.
Most people in their feedback are listing around £20-30 charges. And don't fedex usually send the charge letter weeks or months after delivery so you don't have to pay their fees?

How does getting the bill late mean you don't have to pay it?

You still have to pay customs duties, but given the contract is between the courier and the seller, not the buyer, if they deliver it to you and then decide a few months later they want to charge a £300 'handling fee' then they have no legal grounds to do so, as you never had a contract with the courier and never agreed to pay it. Them sending you a bill because they had to sort out customs is like you sending them a bill for having to wait in for them. They do it because most people are stupid and just tut and pay it.
