So here's the sociological question of the day: Can gaming be something
that parents enjoy with their children? In this age of MMO and fractured
market demographics, can a father and son (or mother and daughter)
reasonably expect to be able to play the same games together? Or are we
still in an era of single-player fantasy worlds where personal discovery
trumps shared experience? If games are like art and literature were ages
ago, will I be able to reminisce with my grandchildren about Ryo Hazuki
and Lara Croft the way I might have with my grandfather about Luke
Skywalker and Nancy Drew? Or does a soulless marketplace dominated by
Electronic Arts make every game short-lived and disposable?
Absolutely. Some games are perfect for co-op play with kids,
particularly things like the Lego Starwars series.
Watching my nieces play Lego StarWars isn't a pretty sight. They
should call it unco-op mode! One wants to go right, the other left,
neither will compromise queue a massive screaming and crying fit which
mom has to come in to sort out. Repeat that every 3-5 minutes!
Games have taken over their play time. Pretty much all the do now is
play their various consoles. Makes me proud!!
