I think I am going to go Fedora as the Ubuntu server doesn't have X11 by default so no vnc.

apt-get install x11 vnc

Yes - but as I said in the original message - I wanted the least messing about installing packages - I've got to get various DB's and servers set up on this tonight.

And also having to type sudo all the time used to drive me mad.

sudo bash

Will Ubuntu support this? I didn't think you could get a shell running as root no matter what. On my machine at home I ended up creating a load of aliases for things I wanted to do as root.

paging Dr Richard Gaywood??!?!

The name didn't ring a bell (people kept alt.digitser secret from me) so I did a search, found his site and saw this :

How did you make the site?

Another question I seem to get asked a fair bit. I make all the HTML myself by hand in the thoroughly wonderful Vim editor. I write the main part of each page, save that as a file, then a Perl script I wrote wraps the page template - the swirly bit and navigation bits - around each page. This means if I change the page template, I only have to change one file and re-run the "make site" Perl script again. It also means I'm not wedded to a particularly package, as I would be if I was using Dreamweaver or something.

- now that is l33t (and more than a bit sad)
.
