I don't disagree with you, but I think it's also worth mentioning that any build of Linux allows you to breathe new life into a lot of lower-spec hardware. Windows XP might choke on a PII-300, but Knoppix with some network drivers feels right at home and chugs along fine. So Zo's MySQL implementation may end up running fine on his previous PC, which sits alone and unloved in the cupboard.
My old PC is my MacBook Pro, which will continue to be used on a daily basis, only now I won't have to carry it to the office every day up the two mile hill (they're surprisingly heavy over distance).
