What makes everyone think that it's still Liberty City? Looks very
different to me (although GTA was a very long time ago for me).


Maybe it's the sign that said "Liberteen" that makes them think that, but
unless there's more than that (that I'm missing too), it looks like New
York to me -or a version of it at least.
The statue of Liberty is there (is this where the Liberteen sign comes
from?) and other landmarks look familiar.
I know GTA games use 'familiar' landmarks scattered around all their
games, but a likeness of the real NY could be... dare I say it?...

For me the layout of the city itself looks different for a start - wider
roads, taller buildings, more cosmopolitan.

And I didn't see the Liberty City sign some mentioned. Did the old Liberty
City have a Statue of Liberty? I forget.
