I used to do SW which was controlling test equipment and vastly more time was spent writing code to control the equipment and analyse the results than on doing the display, this back in the days before having a GUI was common when we still has to display graphs. ... I sell the idea on the basis that two days spent learning the basics at the outset of the 3-4 years spent on a PhD will pay back in giving the student somewhere like 3-4 months more writing time, saved from the time otherwise spent fiddling with font drop-downs and menus in Word trying to "make it look right", or spent fighting Word's reluctance to perform repetitive formatting sensibly, or to transfer from desktop to laptop without reformatting the whole document. ...
