I think there was a similar amount of tension then too, there was a big
build up to the match at least. Which all turned out to be fairly nice,
disappointingly enough.

Athlete stereotypes notwithstanding, football players tend to display some
class and gentlemanly restraint on the whole. While it's tempting to see
the World Cup as a mechanism for working out international disputes, it's
still just a sporting event and all in good fun. Which is prehaps why the
United States isn't a serious contender as it is the land that invented
professional wrestling and the travelling freakshow. Here in the USA,
entertainment wins out over any expression of sportsmanship.
