Re: Last Play, Want, Bin Before Christmas

PLAY

Saturday evening, Tamsyn's 'playing' on the Internet on her computer,
I'm on my computer putting some friends codes into, and playing, Mario
Kart DS (and so that was also online). And suddenly everything stops
working.

My router is connected to the Internet fine. The wireless part is
working fine, in that it's letting everything 'connect' to it. But it's
not assigning any IP addresses. The DHCP server has just given up.

I connect Tam's laptop up to it with an ethernet cable, and that works
fine - Internet access and all. I play with the settings, trying to
turn off the DCHP and then back on, but no go. It seems to have given
up the ghost.

I try again on Sunday morning, doing a factory reset and reconfiguring
everything from scratch. Still no joy. After a few hours, I give up.

Looks like a new router then. In the afternoon, just before I go out to
buy one, I try Tam's laptop over wireless one last time. It connects!
For about three minutes. Then it dies again.

I gave my friend Kieron a call to find out the model number of his
Netgear router, and to see if it was OK. He said yes. So I got it from
Currys, since it was £69, including a free USB adaptor - don't really
need this since I've got a card installed in my PC, and I've got a PCMI
card for Tam's laptop. But still. Can't really compalin - that's half
the price that I paid for my old router two years ago.

Plug it in via Ethernet cable to configure it, and do so in about 5
minutes despite having never seen the interface before. It's much
better that D-Link stuff. Set the wireless part to have the same SSID
and channel and WEP key as before, and then try connecting via the
wireless card instead. And it works - but it's got very poor reception.
I try changing the channel from 1 to 11 and reception shoots up to 90%
(from 30%) - hoorah!

I go into my study to find my other computer already connected (at 98%).
 Hoorah!

I turn on my DS, and it connects. Hoorah!

I turn on my Xbox, and then remember that the WAP's configured for
channel 1. And that's a right pain to change. BOO. But I know how to
do it - you have to factory reset it, then set all the wireless
configuration, and then the very last thing to do is to set it into
bridge mode. I link it up to Tam's laptop via ethernet cable, and plug
it in. Two minutes later, I can smell burning.

By mistake, I've used the old router's plug instead of the WAP's. It
fitted perfectly. Smoke is now pouring out of the ventilation holes. I
turn it off, and leave it to cool down, then rather tentatively plug it
back in (using the correct lead this time). Nothing happens. Great.

So today I've got to go and buy myself a new WAP or bridge. It's not
going to be D-Link though.

Other than that, not much.

WANT

My own copy of Animal Crossing. I have a borrowed one (a friend's away
until Thursday), and I'm very lucky that I've had no likable animals
move into town yet, since I'll have to start a new town when I get my
own copy and give this one back.

King Kong (GC)
I didn't put this on my Christmas list. Why not?

BIN

Stata. Oh yes.
