Yeah. I think my point is, you can't really go back on graphical
advances depending on what you're trying to do.
In a 3D game like half life, they're clearly going for 'photorealism'.
So if they screw up the lighting, then it's not as good as it could have
been.
Something like, say, XIII might not matter about lighting, because
they're going for cartoony.
Something like metroid is 2D, so is a completely different kind of
requirement in terms of graphics.
Disclaimer: PC games aren't crap if they go for photorealism but have
flat non-atmospheric lighting, if the gameplay is there (like half life
1) but it's probably less immersive.
Like Katamari damashii has blocky characters. But that's an artistic
stylistic decision. Half Life it wasn't a decision, it was a
limitation, now the limitation is removed, it's a bit crap looking.
For example Rez won't really ever look dated. But Panzer Dragoon Orta
might. Even though both look lovely now, when they do another game that
surpasses the photorealism type style in panzer dragoon then you'll
notice the shortcomings of the engine.
Rez is abstract however, so will always look great. I don't really know
what my point is. I'm just waffling now.
