I fail to see how a BIOS update can change the drive type. HD-DVD and
BluRay both use blue lasers which have a shorter wavelength than the
red lasers currently used by DVD drives (CD uses an infrared laser for
point of comparison).
A BIOS update can not change the emission frequency of a laser head.
Their is no conceivable mechanism by which it could.
