Have you tried all the various compatibility options (hit select when the game's highlighted)? Maybe one of those needs to be enabled for it to work.

For future reference of anyone else who finds themselves in this situation, shoving the hard drive into a PC and copying it across directly seems to work.

It was the copying it across the network that seemed to break it, then.

Bit of a pain to add and remove hard drives from equipment, but at least I can now... er... leave GT4 on my hard drive and never bother playing it again.
