Well, in some cases it's applicable.
Think of the modern charts - is the number one single the best song
there is? Is the number one game the best game out there? McDonalds is
popular but does it serve the best food? Ford are no doubt popular cars
but surely there are better?
The point is that if something appeals to the lowest common denominator
then it will prove popular and as a result, it will shift units. In
order to have this mass-market appeal something has to give, whether
it's quality, style, features, whatever.
I really hope the Revolution takes off but due to it being a bit
'different' and essentially a niche product, it's all too easy for Sony
and Microsoft, and to some extent, publishers, to put the boot in and
try and kill it at birth. If you put the seeds of doubt into the minds
of the public at this early stage then the battle is half won. This
happened with the Gamecube and I'm afraid it's going to happen again.
