I think it's because I can see more detail in the graphics on the DS screen, and
some colours don't show up at all on the SP (particularly certain shades of
red).

Since playing my games on the DS, I find that I have trouble actually seeing the
game on the SP now, unless I hold it under a bright light, and the audio quality
just seems a lot duller too.

Control-wise, the SP's better it has to be said.
