Re: Sun Tel: Secret council tax database penalises homes with a view

This is nothing less than a Communist conspiracy.

We have lived in the same house for 40 years. Now we are on a fixed
income. We can no more afford to pay more council tax than we can
afford fancy dinners out or holidays abroad or a car. Our neighbours
are all johnny-come-latelys with big money from the City.

The only way out is death.

It's simple.  It's the game of political scaremongering.  Tory central
office knows it's a hot potato that ordinary folk don't really
understand.  So all they have to do is pick up on some procedural
aspect of council tax - neglecting to mention much of it is little
different from when they were last in power - then twist it into
something sinister and surreptitious, and toss it to the press in the
hope of feeding the general populace's paranoia.  No matter that they
have expressed no plans to do anything different when they come back
to power; spread enough FUD, and eventually come polling day, some of
it will have stuck.  That's the game.

In my opinion, council tax should be partially based on income as well as
the house value in 1991.  The old poll tax was better than sliced bread to
me.  I was paying Band A tax on a band D property.  I realise that it wasn't
to good for those living in Band A properties, but in my case I was paying
less than half of what I pay now.  Council tax evaluation is completely
arbitrary and is in fact in many cases totally unfair and a complete
shambles

For example, there are two identical houses (originally) very close to my
property (which is Band D). One of these properties has huge extensions,
almost doubling the size of the house, and has two garages, yet is still in
Band C, and has been for twenty years  The other house, which is right
opposite my own, has also had many extensions, but is still in Band D.  The
owners of both properties have also extended their side fences to the
pavement,  completely against planning rules.  I applied for planning
permission many years ago to do the same, but was refused permission ,
although it was my land.  Because the owners of these properties moved their
fences over seven years ago, it is now a fete accompli and the council
cannot force them to move the fences.
