It's not your imagination, things are getting a lot worse.

Interesting, my ISP stopped my free usenet access a month or so ago,
so I've been using Google Groups and wasn't sure if it was just
Google. It's becoming unusable.

Based upon my experience of a few years ago, I'd recommend http://individual.net/
as they suppressed almost all spam. They are a popular choice amongst
the UK usenet community and they speak English, so there's no language
problem.
