If you studied then you are a student. Just not a student of an
established centre of learning.

Use the language, stop trying to change it:

student
n noun
1 a person studying at a university or other place of higher
education. Øa school pupil. Ø[as modifier] denoting someone who is
studying to enter a particular profession: a student nurse.
2 a person who takes a particular interest in a subject: a
student of the free market.

DERIVATIVES
studentship noun (British).
studenty adjective (British informal).
