Thanks - sorry! Didn't think this mattered much these days with the
'show/hide quoted text' feature.

What feature?

It's a feature of Google Groups.

What does it do? Why does it make Tim think it avoids the need
to place replies in their correct place relative to quoted text,
bearing in mind that many (indeed most, presumably) people don't
use GG but traditional newsreaders?

It doesn't display the quoted text unless you click on a link.

I don't see why it makes any difference to the top posting problem.
