Money laundering regulations - anyone applied for a credit card recently?

Hi Folks,

I recently "applied for" or rather "was badgered into applying for" a Post
Office credit card about a week ago when I visited a PO branch.

A envelope plunked through my mailslot today with a cover letter claiming
that due to "UK money laundering regulations" the PO are required to confirm
my identify by my providing them with 2 pieces of personal information. One
of the documents has to be chosen from a primary list including passport,
driving license, benefit book etc and the second document from a list
including utility bills, council tax bills etc. I either have to post the
documents in question or provide certified copies.

Never come across this before and it seems to be taking the p*ss a wee bit,
and I'm therefore minded to despatch the application into my shredder. Not
as if I'm desperate for another credit card anyway.

So...Is this type of information request the norm these days or are the PO
trying it on wrt these "money laundering regulations"?

BTW... Please don't suggest ID cards are the solution to this kind of thing
as I'd be minded to thump you one :)
