I have been with MBNA for 10-15 years, spending about £2000/month,
sometimes more, all around Europe, and always paying off the full
amount by direct debit.
Unlike many other CC companies, I never had any authorisation issues
with them. For example Citibank was hopeless, refusing to authorise
various perfectly reasonable transactions.
However, MBNA have started playing silly buggers. Today, they have
refused to authorise a £150 charge from a fairly big UK mail order
digital camera company, on the grounds that when I entered the CC
details I refused to enroll myself in some sort of free Visa credit
card protection programme.
Much worse, MBNA refused to sort it out with the merchant, "due to
security reasons" and "for my own protection" - the usual bollocks we
hear so much these days.
So, time to dump MBNA before they do a "Citibank".
I bank with Cater Allen myself (a great service organisation BTW) and
they issue a Visa card (which I also have) but it's a "deferred Visa
card" and many online merchants who would accept Visa can't take this
one, for reasons which nobody in Cater Allen or anywhere else is able
(or willing) to get to the bottom of. Also I don't want to use that
card widely in case I get ripped off on it - it would cause me a lot
more hassle.
Can anyone suggest a well organised Visa issuer, which does a plain
standard Visa card, and which will give me a £10k credit limit? It
will get paid off fully each month, so no interest incurred.
I've been using Nationwide for several years. If you're spending a lot
while traveling overseas it would be a good choice as their foreign
exchange rates are much better than anyone else.
