The payroll company emailed me to say the first bank still has not
returned the money that was incorrectly paid into my old account. They
said I should contact the bank to ask them to return it. But given the
overdraft situation they are probably unlikely to do that. They said
if it's not returned they will detuct the money from my next salary
payment.
If the money is not returned by the bank can is the payroll company
within it's rights to withhold the same amount from my next salary
payment? As far as they are concerned they paid me the money albeit
into the wrong account.
It was their mistake that led to this situation in the first place. I
specifically gave them all the information they asked for regarding
the bank I wanted my salaray paid into. And now I could be out of
pocket on my next pay-day.
Would the first bank know the transaction was intended for the same
person.
No.
Do banks normally reverse credits in this situation? No. Sorry.
