What happens if you go one step further and add a specific branch
address to Martins Bank within the crossing. As I recall such a cheque
could then only be accepted at the nominated branch.
Thats right. It neednt be the bank or branch at which the payee
maintains his account but it is the branch at which he must present the
cheque for collection. But as a previous poster says, it is likely to
cause consternation at the counter.
However, I accept that things may well have changed in forty plus
years since I dealt with such things. I hear they use computers now.
Apparently!
I'm also old enough to remember the real Martins bank, with the
magnificent golden grasshopper. Shame on you Barclays, for burying that.
Same here. Its where I had my first savings account. Ther old HO in
Liverpool is an impressive building.

That makes much more sense re the effect of a special crossing on the
collecting bank and the final credit bank.
Much too young to remember Martins, but a certain Mr Jack Jones held
an account with one of their branches run by that awful manager,
Mainwaring. Surprising how useful the image of a bank from that
programme is at getting sales people to understand some of the
intricacies and elderly elements of the cheque clearing system.
