One of my colleagues in work apparently knows someone who had it done
to them, and they received a similar call themselves last week.
Misquoting a song...
I met a man whose brother said he knew a man who knew the man you're
talking about.

I know what you mean, but in this instance, I know the girl who sent
out the warning personally - she`s a security admin, and not known to
make such stories up.

Fits the pattern of many rumours like this, I had one sent to me* last year
by someone in security in another company who I know, it turned out she was
sent it by a well-meaning policeman (I checked) who was "warning" many
security people at local companies of this supposed 'scam'; when I checked
back, he'd been sent it by someone he trusted and sent it on. When I first
queried it, she said 'it must be true it was sent by the local police dept
they wouldnt make it up'. As it happens, they didnt, but they did pass it
on!
[This was one of the 'dont press XXX' or they will make free telephone calls
using your number' supposed-scams]

I'm sure the same will be true in your friends case, or do you *really*
believe her account, when its *exactly* word-for-word to the snopes site.
Its not just similar, its the exact same thing. Show it to her and see what
she says. Chances are, someone else sent it to her. It could not have been
told to her, the wording is *way* too close, she even remembered the
security number (what are the odds of that), and it was the *exact* same 5
digits as Snopes..do you reckon the scammers feel they have to use the same
5 digit 'badge number' world wide as a lucky charm?

You'll find, when something like this happens, that several people often
warn you about these things over the space of a few days or that it happened
to a 'friend of a friend'. I have someone that usually emails me (and a vast
dist list of people) every time one of these crop up.....six degrees of
seperation and all that.
