Re: Sustainable UK population

If the CO2 issue is the biggest problem then I can't see there's much to
worry about.

That's quite an assumption !

Mostly because if 200 years is your target, rather than end
date, for such an economy then that's a hell of a long time at present
rates of scientific and technological advance.

It is, but while technology offers better ways to do what is thermodynamically feasible, it may well not offer ways to un-burn coal, pull CO2 out of the air, lower sea levels or compensate displaced peoples.

I'm doing a job using
technology that didn't exist when I was at school, never mind when my great
great great great great great great great grandfather was at school.
Actually I very much doubt he went to school - but I'm here, so I guess he
coped somehow.

Perhaps he didn't have to cope with the consequences of climate change in a part of the world that is significantly threatened by it ?

Anyone fancy a separate thread to brainstorm what we all think the UK
mix of energy sources might be in 100 years time? Purely for the
entertainment value of collective speculation.

What will the Chinese be selling? I understand they even have thoughts of
mining the moon.

Will the UK as we know it exist in 100 years?

:)

At a guess the main source of energy for industry will be - unimportant.

In the UK maybe, but somebody has to make stuff somewhere which brings us to energy for transport.

The main source for domestic uses will be electricty

Or hydrogen ?

derived from whatever
is cheapest.

Possibly, but how will that cost be calculated ?
