We converted our loft into another bedroom a few years back. Although the
room was well insulated it still gets mighty warm in the summer. If we
installed a solar thermal solution to heat our water would that have any
effect on the temperature of the loft?
Yes.
I'd like to think that by using that
"unwanted" heat energy to heat water that the room would be cooler.
Somewhat. Depends what fraction of the roof the panel covered. Very
few systems cover the entire roof.
But I'm
worried that having warmed water on the other side of the roof might act
like a hot water bottle at night time.
Certainly not ! The panels are insulated, but no water flows back
though them at night anyway.
In winter they will reduce heat losses from your loft, and in summer
they will reduce heat gain and provide hot water.
