Re: Something, Something and Recycle

It came to mind last Saturday - it had been shouting at me for months but
only became crystal clear as I was talking to someone about energy use,
renewable energy and the like. The "climate" word wasn't mentioned, but the
moment of clarity went something like this:

"We try to do our best, we recycle what we can."

And that's it?

What happened to all the other stuff, the real big hitters, the things that
can potentially make a huge difference to the future of our planet if the
majority of us decide to do them?

"We recycle what we can."

That really is it.

Yes it's true. The goal is that we have to change our life style. There
are a lot of people now that are talking about nuclear power as the
solution against the fossil fuel...
alking about Nuclear power versus coal plants is like discuss if is
better oil or gasoline to cut off a fire.

The problem and the solution are:
1- Renewable energy and material
2- A different life style

I never saw a Sit Com where the star call stupid someone that have a
big and polluting car.

Usually marketing promotes wrong behaviours as cool models.

Energy and material are a problem generated by the market that ask to
all to buy a lot of useless things, polluting cars,
lamps, products with a lot of useless packaging around, and so on ....

A lot of different kind of energies ready to be used and a new life
style is the easy way to create a wonder ans sustainable future.

I work for a web site that is a waste stock exchange. Companies insert
listing and exchange waste.
Check it and verify how many scraps are usefull material

Yesterday politics and people was thinking that recycling was just an
exotic idea.

Today the recycling market is rising fast, and a lot of companies sell
or buy waste for produce new products.

Today the Politics and people say that alternative and Renewable energy
are exotic concept.

But if you read something more than the television guide or your mobile
instructions, you can find a lot of documents about
real experiences about the efficency of renewable energies.

This year for example I had installed solar panels and a biomass
heating system that working with: wood pellets, mais seeds and other
green scraps.
I have a place where I can produce all the fuel/mais I need. So
starting from this winter I will not buy any more oil and gasoline for
heating and hot water for my house and other flats close to my house.
We produce our fuel by our self.

If you live in town you can choice to buy energy just from companies
that produce green energy.

My next step is to produce my energy but not using old ancient
combustible engine. I want to produce it with combustible cell with
hydrogen.
And it's no a fantasy. More than 10 years ago I had meet a swiss man
that had installed in his flat a hydrogen electric generator.
He used photovoltaic panel for produce Hydrogen from water and Hydrogen
for produce eletricity.
He modified his car and it worked with hydrogen too. This man was a
normal people that started reading something more than the newspaper
and the television guide.

We can use hydrogen but we can use alchool too. In brasil the pubblic
bus uses alchhool instead fuel. We can produce alchool with a lot of
different scraps and it is a renewvable and unlimited resource.

There is a million of different thinghs we can do for a sustainable
future but as you can see everyday
there are a lot of criminals that want to destroy everything to get
money and power. They say that we need energy and
the only way is to produce with: nuclear, oil, carbon, ***.
They are stupid, and bad, but they do the choice for our future.

I understand that industries and politics mission is get money and so
they have not time to reason or reflect about what is better for our
future.
In Italy we had a prime minister for de development that was a tooth
doctor without any other experience than rotten mouths, the prime
minister
for the healt that was e mechanich ... I don't know if in the other
countries the politics have the culture to do their work.
Usually politics have no culture, informations, sensibility and enough
freedom to do a good job for the people.
it's normal. I don'tlike it but I can understand.

But I cannot understand why people don't try to reflect about the
problems.
They have no reason to live as slayer leaving others choising what is
better for everyone.

So I hope that we don't waste our time answering to people that want to
hypnotize us with false problems as "It's better nuclear or oil?" I
hope we all work to disseminate a sustainabel and true culture because
we want a sustainable future for all the planet.

If you want to read something more about hydrogen generator try to
search on ebay! You will see that the technology is close to you

Bye
Mauro

And why should I be surprised? Maybe I should be pleased about the
recycling, but I'm not; I'm really disappointed. Not because people recycle,
but because for almost everyone I talk to - and I guess my friends and
acquaintances are more environmentally sensitive than average - that's where
the buck stops. Did I put them on the spot? Not really - the comments are
invariably volunteered during conversations. Are they doing lots more? Well,
let's see.

An extremely reputable UK Government survey for 2001 found that in the UK,
52% of people took an active part in paper recycling (the highest percentage
for any material). As an aside, the figure for the influential 25-44 age
range was only 45% - the highest being for aged 65+.

In the same survey, an impressive 40% of people said they had cut down on
their use of either electricity or natural gas. The reason? 80% of those
people did it to save money. Only 15% did so to protect the environment.
Aggregated, this means that only 6% of people in the UK have reduced their
use of natural gas or electricity in order to protect the environment.

And here is another. 40% of people had deliberately used public transport,
cycled or walked instead of using the car. Now that is frankly appalling in
itself considering that means 60% of people use the car at every possible
opportunity. The reason for reducing car use? 59% to get more exercise,
compared to 17% (both answers could be given by one person) to protect the
environment. Again, only about 6% of people in the UK have reduced their car
use in order to protect the environment.

The title of this piece has a second "Something" in it. Remember the mantra
was always meant to be "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle - in that order". After
reducing what you use, you consider how you can reuse it, so it doesn't have
to be recycled. In terms of something like office paper, we can reuse it as
animal bedding, scrap for notes, packaging, wrapping paper, mulch (yes, I
have done all of these). In terms of energy it becomes more critical.

Reduce : Use less energy in the first place

Reuse : Use the same source over and over again - renewables, combined heat
and power and so on

Recycle : There is no recycle - energy is energy

Now, don't get me wrong, I think recycling is a great thing - it reduces
ground and potentially air pollution and reduces the amount of raw materials
required for products; although, be honest, when was the last time that you
consciously bought a product made from recycled materials?

In our version of a civilised, free society, people will almost always take
the least cost, least effort option. So what's the problem if people only
want to recycle?

No problem, no problem at all. But if you do care whether the world gets
better or not then you will already be doing far more.
