OK, as I thought this is not in our general knowledge base yet, so
probably problematical compared with isolating the supply and being
self sufficient when enough wind blows?
That rather depends on what you mean by isolating the supply. If it
is really isolated then that is fine, though the isolated electrical
system will need to be properly designed and installed. That will be
expensive.
An electricity supply that can be changed over from external to
local supply is possible, any number of large buildings have just
this sort of arrangement with standby diesel generators. However,
the changeover will need to be very carefully handled. Will it be
automatic or manual? Will it be automatic in one direction and
manual in the other (more of a consideration with standby sets)?
Note that while under local supply you cannot rely on the external
earthing system but must supply your own. That will be expensive.
Both this and the previous option would need to be designed by a
suitably qualified electrical engineer.
One of the advantages of being connected to the grid is that it can
supplement a turbine as necessary. If the turbine is producing 3kW
then that will run a traditional washing machine while heating, but
turning on a kettle will overload it. With a grid connected system
this limitation is not there. It also uses standard components and
the previous personage is not necessary.
