Just been reading this - well worth a read if you can find a copy (by
Robert Hunter, one of the founder members). The thing I hadn't realised is
what a bunch of freaks they were at the beginning (meant as a compliment!)
There's one bit where they were wandering around in the mid Atlantic
looking for the whaling fleet. Their radio direction finding equipment
couldn't lock on to the Russian fleet's signals, so they cast the I Ching
instead. And apparently it worked. All the way through there's this
flavour of magic and general sixties weirdness - being blessed by the
Indians, playing experimental electronic music to the whales through
underwater loudspeakers, etc.
Which leaves me wondering what happened to all that mad energy, both in
Greenpeace and the world at large?
