So what advantage is there having a renewable source if it'll be out of action should the power go off?
Apart from reducing your power bills and environmental footprint ?
Apart from those ... I think I was finding it frustrating the idea that having the capacity to create your own electricity but being foiled *because* no one else has any...
:) Yes.
I assume its not just as simple as unplugging the bit which makes you shut down.
A competent electronics bod might be able to mod it, but its use would then be illegal.
If you have more power cuts than that, or otherwise intermittent supply, and really need to be able to run off wind alone, I'm sure we can work out a way to do what you need.
At this stage we're wondering how to measure the windspeed here - working out the average windspeed - http://www.dti.gov.uk/cgi-bin/nre/noabl1.pl gives us 4.6 Wind speed at 10m agl (in m/s) Which isn't much above the 3 needed to start generating...
And given that there's a cube law between the energy you can extract and the speed of the wind, that does suggest you'd get a pretty pathetic outcome.
Look at solar water heating instead ? Lower cost and faster pay back ?
