Campaign for direct democracy in Britain
(see latest CDD definition below)

Ideas for the next local council and London mayoral ELECTIONS (May 2008)
run-up period:
1 Ask representatives of political parties, incumbents and candidates
about their attitudes to citizens' direct democracy.
2 Write to head offices and approach local party constituency branches.
3 Suggest that they should indicate support for I and R in their
election manifestos, if they have not already done so.
4 Show them our short proposal
http://www.iniref.org/steps.html
and ask them to introduce a similar proposal in the local or county
council (we'll supply further detail on request).
5 Democracy Reform needs YOU! Consider voting ONLY for those candidates
who pledge to work for the introduction of I and R if they get elected
6 Stand yourself as a direct-democracy candidate in a future local or
country election.
7 Approach press and mass media about this.

I and R refers to Citizens' Initiative and Referendum, defined here as
Citizens' Direct Democracy CDD
Definition of citizens’ direct democracy.
Revised March 2008
Comments again invited.
We define citizens’ direct democracy CDD to include those forms of
governance in which the electorate decides on issues, matters of public
concern, in addition to choosing among candidates for council or
parliament (indirect or "representative" democracy). This form of
democracy CDD is often referred to as "the initiative and referendum".
Political power in CDD is exercised by “The People” although parliament
and government continue to operate as well.
The term “citizens’ direct democracy” refers to forms of democratic
decision-making which can be initiated by an agreed number of citizens
and which can lead to a decision by ballot or vote of the whole
electorate. In this context "ballot" means the same as binding
referendum or plebiscite. Thus citizens can select and determine public
issues, stipulate the wording of proposals and put proposals to the
whole electorate of the state, city, town, village or other political
unit. Examples of such procedures are:
-- the citizens’ law-proposal (initiative) leading to ballot,
-- the veto referendum,
-- the constitutional referendum and
-- the recall-initiative.
