CFLs are not new, I've been using some for over 20 years. My experience was
that there were locations where CFL performance was acceptable to me, and
locations where it wasn't. Hence I use a mix of bulb types (and am
stockpiling sufficient incandescents to ensure there'll be enough to see me
out).

Further, even the manufacturers admit to a roughly 2% pa reduction in
light output,
so buy a higher rated one if you feel the need.
My point was that lamps which were considered equivalent in output to
incandescent lights in the first place, reach the stage where their output
is no longer acceptable in comparison, before their claimed 'life' has
expired.

Hence, a time comes when,As I said the technology is likely to mature, and the results will

The technology is already mature - you can now get CFLs suitable for use
with dimmer switches and electronic switches, for example. Alternatively, if
reduction in energy consumption is the key, people could always replace
their domestic light fittings with fluorescent strip lighting (more
efficient than CFLs, and a mature technology which has been available for
many decades, yet not much used in living rooms or bedrooms, for some
unknown reason), or wait for LED lighting to reduce in price.
