But better not to plant trees where there were resident goats.
Why, exactly. Do you think it better to have goats rather than trees?
Or would it be a better idea to shoot the goats, as is done with deer
that browse on young trees?
Deer shouldn't be shot either. You consider yourself free to consume
whatever you want and in what quantity you feel like, yet you would
deny other species the same right to eat to survive under penalty of
death. Typical selfish attitude.
I would expect the deer (and the goats) to end up on a dinner plate
(or as carrion for necrophages), given that they cannot achieve the
destiny nature intended for them - to be eaten by wolves.
Not for 350 years. And since you seem to know about deer being the
prey of wolves, what percentage of the deer population was actually
caught?
Pretty much 100% of them. Wild animals seldom die from old age.
So all deer were caught by wolves?
So why did the population of deer only start to rise exponentially
(too big a word for you - look it up) in the last few decades?

All truth passes through three stages:
First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.
