In case you can't be bothered to look up Irving's case on Google, he was
convicted of holocaust denial in Austria, a country where it is a criminal
offence to deny or to justify the European Jewish Holocaust, and sentenced
to three years imprisonment, actually serving about one year.
Irving had written and lectured since the 1980s to the effect Hitler was
unaware of the holocaust, that there was no evidence for the systematic
execution of 6 million Jews, and that some claimed Holocaust sites were
fakes, etc., although he later claimed to have changed his mind and been
convinced that the evidence did indeed support the conventional view of the
holocaust.
Personally, I believe that making it a criminal offence to hold and express
an opinion, no matter how 'off the wall', tasteless, and insensitive that
opinion may seem, is one step too far on the road to totalitarianism.
