There is no need to erect any futuristic scenarios. Basic mammalianIt is

natural checks - such as parasites, diseases and predators - increase
to a point where range depletion causes the numbers to suddenly

as you have proposed for humanity in the near future.
What Robert thinks is that because humans have a resource available to
them that other mammals haven't i.e. a perception of the future, we
will escape this fate. I hope he's right.
Yes, I believe that our civilisation could well break.
As with the Romans by general complacency and laziness,
Or by bad religious strife as with Incas etc.
However some individuals will be resourceful enough in some places to
survive.
In terms of just about all of Europe, and much of Asia, birth rates are
falling below replacement. In most of the world the rates are falling.
Population is rising because of greater longevity.
Consumption is going up, and if civilisation is to survive aspects of this
will have to change. I think people are sensible enough to be able to see
this.
The notion we hear that the problem is that China and India are causing
the problem, is flawed. Much of the electricity from the power stations
which open every week is used to make the cheap goods we have to throw
away soon after. This empty lifestyle IS empty and will have to change if
our culture is to survive.
