Reports from Bavaria confirm that Bruno, the first wild brown bear to

We hear, every now and again, on this group, from people advocating
the
reintroduction of large predators like bear and wolves to the UK.
Bruno's
fate suggests one would have to be very careful in one's choice of
release
sites.

There was no justification whatsoever for shooting the bear. Instead
of sending out bloodthirsty hunters to locate it the authorities
should have had it located and tranquilised and then if they couldn't
stand having a bear in Germany relocated it to where it would be safe.

The news stories seem to suggest that catching and relocation was the
first
choice, but that they couldn't manage to do it. Why not, is anyone's
guess.

Everyone who was following the story already knew this. Seems, however,
that
a certain well-known ignoramus had been maintaining his usual, dismally
low,
standard of personal knowledge. Or, perhaps, he was deliberately
pretending
to not know the facts. Perish the thought!

Or perhaps he suspected/believed the recapture initiative was merely a token
effort, and that they were too quick to resort to lethal means? One story I
read had a German official quoted as suggesting people should realise the
bear was killing German sheep and rabbits 'for fun', to justify its killing.
I don't know whether that's true, of course, sounds very John Cleese to me
....
