I was wondering whether teachers have a tenddency to mark particular
pupul's work early or late in the marking cycle .and wheter this has
an effect on themarks and the the generally neater work done by girls
tend to increase their marks. As I say iam no more than hypothsising
and have no evidence one way or the other .
I am sure I have seen somewhere the results of a study that says teachers
mark the work of 'pretty' or 'attractive' students higher than ugly ones.
I also moderate coursework and I remember have identical pieces of work from
one teacher. One was handwritten (neatly) and one typed. Handwritten one
got full marks and the other about half. When questioned, the teacher
explained that the first one came from a good student and the other from a
weak one. I pointed out that they were the same words (he hadn't noticed
that) but he still insisted that the first one was worth more marks than the
other cos it came from a good student. Didn't seem to matter how many times
I said 'but they are the same words', he just insisted he had marked them
right.
