OK - this is a bit of a rant, but I did find that, actually, the UK
doesn't
do too bad with it's education system when compared internationally.

Interesting.
I visited a friends in USA recently, in an area described as the best
qualified in the USA (measured on the basis of PhDs be capita). Both worked
or work in education, one as teacher of maths in secondary schools. They
had asked me to take some UK KS3 maths SATs papers, which I did. Their view
was that 16 year olds in the USA would struggle with the 6-8 ("higher")
paper. Now I accept that that isn't a validated, scientific survey, but it
is I believe indicative.
I don't believe our system is perfect, nor as good as it could be, but I
don't think it is as bad as some people paint it.
