The Role a lecturer within a Further Education College

Colleges aim to provide first rate learning experience's for all of
their students and recognises the importance of the professional
teacher in achieving this goal. The successful teacher is passionate
about teaching and learning, and understands that the role is far wider
than just putting on a good classroom performance

A successful lecturer recognises that working together as a team with
other teachers; with learning support staff and administrators is a
crucial part of the role. The successful lecturer is continually
updating both his/her academic and occupational curriculum knowledge.

The varied roles, activities and values of the teacher are outlined
below.

1. Course and Student Management and Co-ordination

All teachers will normally have duties as members of course teams,
which could include the following:

Course Leader Responsible for an individual course, leading a course
team and ensuring that students on this course are successful.

Subject Leader Responsible for co-ordinating developments in an
individual subject area. This could involve advising on and
co-ordinating - teaching resources, teaching and learning methods,
academic developments, and curriculum developments.

Pathway Leader Responsible for a pathway within an overall area of
study. Examples of this include a pre-defined combination of A Levels
within the full A Level programme and a specialised route within a
broad HE programme
Personal Tutor All teachers will normally be expected to act as a
personal tutor for one or more individual students. The tutor will
support students through the learning process setting targets and
tracking their progress via an individual learning plan.

Associate Teachers and hourly paid Teachers will not normally be
expected to make a significant contribution to these duties. They
should however be fully committed to the activities and values set out
in the rest of the paper.

2. Values and Activities of a College Lecturer

The lecturer should be a pro-active member of one or more course teams,
supporting other team members and the Course Leader. Members of
successful teams work closely together on planning and delivering the
curriculum, ensuring that the programme of activities allow students to
meet all of the learning outcomes. The effective course team meets
regularly to review the progress of students, and to evaluate their own
performance with clear plans for improvement.

3. Delivering High Quality Teaching and Learning

The lecturer will take into account the needs and backgrounds of
individual students when designing learning activities, ensuring
appropriate differentiation. The lecturer should also understand and
respond to different preferred learning styles of students within a
group.


The lecturer should design activities that fully engage students with
new material, linking it to the student's experience. Tasks should be
authentic, varied, set in a meaningful context, and related to the real
world. Learning should be both fun and stimulating and utilise a wide
range of resources both within and outside of formal timetabled
sessions and this all requires careful planning by the teacher.
Well-planned sessions engage students in a variety of activities and
only rarely involve listening to the teacher talking.

4. Providing Formative and Summative Assessment and Reviewing Student
Progress

Frequent and well-planned formative assessment is crucial for learning.
Successful teachers provide regular, frequent feedback. Students
inevitably make mistakes when they engage with new concepts. So
learning activities should offer opportunities for self-assessment,
correction, peer discussion, teacher feedback and other 'reality
checks'.

A key role for the teacher is to develop clear and appropriate
summative assessments that accurately measure performance against
learning outcomes and provide good opportunities for the students to be
successful. Results and comments from assessment should be fed-back
promptly. Lecturers should work together as a team, sharing proposed
summative assessments and verify that the assessment outcomes of
students are valid in line with College and awarding body Internal
Verification and assessment procedures.



5. Administrative functions necessary to support the role

Lecturers need to carry out a range of administrative and
organisational tasks. These tasks are generally related to tracking
student progress, achievement and attendance, and allow them to report
information to others within the College and externally.

6. A champion of our values

The lecturer should be a champion of our values and should promote the
College mission.

The values and styles that should be visible to students, colleagues,
parent's employers include:

· Preparing young people for working life, motivating and inspiring,
developing positive attitudes; valuing learning
· Promoting and demonstrating best practice and up to date knowledge
both generally and within his or her occupational curriculum area
· Actively promoting equality of opportunity and the college's
policies against harassment and racism and a high standard of student
behaviour within the college environment and all off-site College
activities
· Being authoritative, businesslike and professional; committed to
high standards - appropriate role model for students
· Setting an example by being punctual and ready to go at the start
of formal sessions
· Demonstrating professional authority by presentation and
appearance.
