If you conjured up a copy of The Concise Oxford Dictionary 9th Ed. you would
see that
spell-checker n. = SPELLING CHECKER
Oh sure. It's its job to report on usage. But it's not a very nice
usage, it's one which is sloppy and - if we are allowed to adduce
standards which are not only based on usage - wrong.
A weight checker checks weights. A label checker checks labels. A
spelling checker checks spellings. And a spell checker checks spells.
But b'aint no use arguefying with usage.
