How much time goes into admin and preparation work compared to
delivering lessons?

Can anyone please give a rough idea.

It varies from day to day and week to week, but averaged over the year,
I'd guess I spend 3 hours planning for each hour of teaching.

I don't mean to sound harsh but are you really saying that in a 5 hr
teaching day you are spending 15hrs planning????!!!!! If so I really
think you need to talk to an experienced teacher in your school about how
to plan effectively. I would say even 3 hours of planning is far too much
each day.

I would say that an average lesson takes me no more than 5 minutes to plan
(although I don't need to write a lesson 'plan' for it), a special lesson
a bit more perhaps if I need to create a resource rather than use the
things we already have in school.

What does your school require by way of written planning on a weekly basis?

Do you mean 5 minutes based on previous plans which you have available?!

You shouldn't really need to be reinventing the wheel every year, there should be a well structured SOW for the subject that means you do virtually no planning (e.g. for my 2 science classes I don't do any planning over the whole year, and if I really really need to 'plan' somehthing different I discuss it with the technician during a lesson when the pupils are doing something that doesn't need my full attention). ...
